Description: new black midi tech just dropped - and it supports 256 keys 😎 Here is the full write-up on the technique being used (by Minelolpride): docs.google.com/document/d/12cMQM6zZTTALd8qp4F0Mh0rhuVds0_Mv9tP6Cz865-U === Note === THIS VIDEO HAS NO AUDIO. The copyright landscape on YouTube is still pretty finicky so I didn't bother (my channel is unmonetized but you never know). You can, however, sync up the Bad Apple!! Nomico video to this video (with an 8.4s sync) if you visit this link, click play on both videos (so they can buffer and catch up), and then press the play button at the bottom of the screen. The syncing isn't perfect, but this is a proof-of-concept. viewsync.net/watch?v=i41KoE0iMYU&t=0&v=qJSAKxLzbr4&t=8.4 === Attribution === Minelolpride's channel: youtube.com/user/mineLOLpride Original Source Video: youtube.com/watch?v=i41KoE0iMYU MIDI Player: Zenith with the PFA+ Plugin, available here: github.com/arduano/Zenith-MIDI - honestly Zenith is a whole other topic I've been meaning to cover, but I guess this is its long-awaited entrance. === Write-up === If anyone's remembered "MIDITrail", you'll know that it is a tick-based MIDI player, not a scroll player like Piano from Above. This means that the speed of scrolling in MIDITrail is based on the BPM of the MIDI. When the BPM speeds up, the speed of MIDITrail as a whole increases, and when it slows down, the speed of MIDITrail as a whole decreases. You can see some creators like Han SeRin take advantage of this by adding strategic BPM changes for theatric effect. This is in contrast to a scroll player like Piano from Above or Synthesia where the scroll speed is completely constant and the note's size is scaled relative to the BPM. What Minelolpride discovered in these "variable speed scrolling" tick-based MIDI players is that one could abuse the scrolling mechanics by making the BPM really fast for a short period of time, causing the MIDI to essentially "skip ahead". In standard scroll players, the notes become extremely dense and clustered, but in tick-based players like the one shown in this video, the entire score moves forward. Using these principles, it is possible to achieve stop motion in tick-based MIDI players under the right circumstances. BPM and timing vary massively depending on what PPQ you're editing from and what FPS you're targeting. === Get Involved === To become actively involved in the black MIDI community, here are some excellent ways to get started: Black MIDI Subreddit: reddit.com/r/BlackMIDI Black MIDI Community Discord: discord.gg/s42aft8 My personal Discord can be found in my channel's "ABOUT" tab. This is the one you can contact me via. A warning to all people watching my videos - if you are epileptic/uncomfortable around flashing lights, refrain from watching my videos -- I don't recall anyone actually having a seizure from black MIDI, but avoid those kinds of videos if need be. #blackmidi #impossibleremix #synthesia
